Patty Cake

Literacy Tip

Hi, my name is Cliff. When you play “patty cake” with your baby, trace the first letter of your child’s name in his palm so that he feels the shape of the letter. This beginning knowledge of shapes will help him learn to recognize letters as he gets older.

Patty cake, patty cake, baker’s man (Clap hands rhythmically),
bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, and pat it (Roll and pat hands),
and mark it with B (Trace “B” or first letter of child’s name on palm).
Put it in the oven (Extend both hands)
for baby and me (Point to baby and self).

  • Good video! Besides using the baby’s name, I thought it was a good idea to trace the baby’s first initial in his hand so he/she can feel how it is written.
